Have you considered becoming a film director, but just not sure where to start? Or have you worked on film sets in the past and are working towards directing your own material? Perhaps you'd like to prepare for directing promotional videos or music videos? Join local filmmaker, Blake Talley (AKA "Talley"), in this hands-on, 8 week introduction of Directing for the Screen.
Week 1—"Introduction: What does a Director do?”
This first week will cover various successful directors, discussion about style, approach, casting, and working with actors.
Week 2—“Pre-production: Make the movie before you make the movie.”
This week will review every aspect of pre-production with an emphasis on Directing.
Week 3—“Working with actors”
Through discussion, exercises, and conversation about casting, students will learn tips on how to pull the best performance from your actors. What is an actor’s mindset?
Week 4—“Workshop with actors!”
With live actors, we will take a 2-page scene and direct rehearsals with them in class. Students will take turns working with the actors as well.
Week 5—“Production”
This week we'll discuss the many aspects of what it’s like once your pre-production is finished and you’re on set. You will explore various examples of directors behind the scenes, including successful sets and failed film sets with a variety of directing styles. We'll view clips from behind-the-scenes documentaries such as “Lost in La Mancha”, “The making of The Godfather, “Dangerous Days”, “Lost Soul”, “The Best Worst Movie”, etc.
Week 6—“Prep your scene.”
Students will develop a scene to shoot with real actors. In this week, the class will pick a 5 minute scene that will be filmed in the following week. We’ll split up the script evenly so that each student directs a segment with the actors on a real set with a camera and simple lighting setup.
Week 7—“Filming our scene!”
We’ll spend the two hours of this class directing and filming the actors.
Week 8—“Watch our scene and discuss”
Together we’ll watch the scene and have a good discussion about what we did well, and what we could have done better.
Class will be held once a week for eight weeks, starting Sunday July 16th, 2023, from 4-6 pm. The cost of this course will be $495 ($396 for Alumni), and a $50 deposit is needed to secure the registration. Register and pay ASAP with the form below, as a minimum number of enrolled students will be required.
