Lighting for horror films

Did you ever ask yourself what it is about horror films that make them so scary? Story?, Well crafted monsters? Yes, sometimes, but a lot of what makes a scene scary is the lighting. Ask yourself if your favorite horror film would be as scary if it were lit like a romantic comedy. Also ask yourself if your favorite romantic comedy would be romantic or funny if it were lit like a horror film. Chances are the answer to both those questions is no.
In this class we’ll learn some of the basic lighting techniques great filmmakers employ to create horrifying settings, moods and characters. We'll learn how to distort or conceal reality from the viewer using lighting, which creates uncertainty, tension, and suspense in the minds of the audience, often leading a viewer to fill in non-visual gaps with even scarier imagination.
So, the next time you plan to make a horror film, use the lighting techniques you’ll learn in this class for the maximum horrific experience!
This class will meet on Saturday, March 31st, 2018 from 3:30 pm to 9:30 pm with Brad Hoover as instructor, and include some practical lighting exercises outdoors after sunset. Cost is $55 ($44 for Alumni). Register 2 weeks prior to class to guarantee enrollment.
