Genre! The Workshop: Understanding Genre and How to Use It
Join R. Lyon Bergh for this one-day workshop where he will discuss what a genre actual is and how to use it effectively. It will explore genre as it relates to culture, the market, and the audience. This class will rely heavily on group participation to move the discussion and explore the expectations.
This class will answer the questions:
—What makes a genre a genre?
—Does everything I write need to be in a particular genre?
—How do I know what the rules of a particular genre are?
—Do I have to use all of the tropes and beats of given genre?
—Can I meld genres?
—What is a genre “expectation”?
—Is genre just another word for “formula”?
—Can a genre die?
—What happens if I don’t fulfill all the “audience expectations”?
And it speaks to the following concerns:
—The whole idea of genre seems arbitrary.
—Many of my favorite movies don’t have just a single genre, or any at all.
—I want to tell an original story, but genres seem to have too many set ideas.
—It seems like nobody agrees on what a genre actually is.
—Genre will limit my audience.
—I like genre, but I want my work to be taken seriously.
This workshop is targeted to writers of prose and screenplays, and will be held in-Person, according to Covid Safety protocols on Sunday, February 27th, 2022, 1-5 pm. Cost is $55 (or $44 for Alumni). Registration (below) with payment is REQUIRED in advance.
